Working with and honouring the 5 elements (Air, Fire, Water, Earth and Ether) has been an important part of my life, especially since I began living more in alignment with the seasons and cycles of nature.
The elements make up our natural world, they are associated with different seasons, animals and foods and all the parts of us that makes us human (the mind, our emotions, our body, our spirit). They are acknowledged in ancient medicines, practices, philosophies and traditions across the globe such as Ayurveda, Hinduism, Buddhism, Ancient Greek, Native American, Celtic, Wiccan etc....to name a few. They're also linked to the different signs of the Zodiac (Air signs, Fire signs, Water signs and Earth signs).
It is acknowledged from all different parts of the world that without these basic elements life would simply not be possible.
Therefore, the elements have played a huge part in ceremony and ritual since the very beginning, when our ancestors first started worshiping/celebrating this miraculous thing called LIFE.
They are incorporated into the wheel of the year and medicine wheels within different cultures and are associated with the different directions (east, south, west, north and centre).
I love to welcome in different Element Rituals during the Full moon and New moon circles that I host each month.
As the moon waxes and wanes it moves through each sign of the zodiac. During the full moon and new moon we can utilize the energies that the specific zodiac sign brings - receiving the message of that sign and also connecting with which element it associated with. For example, when the moon is full in Libra (an air sign) I may like to perform a release ritual focusing on the element of Air. Or if the moon is new in Sagittarius (a fire sign) maybe I perform a manifestation ritual using the element of Fire.
Here's the signs of the zodiac and their elements:
AIR SIGNS: Libra, Aquarius, Gemini
FIRE SIGNS: Sagittarius, Leo, Aries
WATER SIGNS: Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio
EARTH SIGNS: Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo
It is customary practice to invoke each element to open a ceremonial space, in Wicca this is called "casting a circle" and is a beautiful way to create a sacred container and welcome protection, balance and harmony.
In this 5 part blog series, I will be drawing from my own experiences and from my experience as a Reiki practitioner, Circle Facilitator and practitioner of my craft (which has it's foundations in Earth based, Celtic and recently also Wiccan inspired practice).
These are my own personal experiences and opinions, in no way am I claiming to "know the way" - I am a forever student who's always learning and willing to learn more. So please take this information and change it up to suit you!
